On June 24th and 25th, 2011 hundreds of people came to enjoy the festivities in our Fifth Annual Dragon Boat Festival held in the City of Temiskaming Shores, Ontario. This year's race saw 9 teams—198 paddlers and drummers—paddling in the beautiful blue waters of Lake Temiskaming. Although Dragon Boat racing is relatively new to Temiskaming Shores, it is being increasing in both attendance and excitement. The combination of excercise, festivity and community spirit is very attractive, and contagious. Teams are already preparing for the Sixth Dragon Boat Festival in June 2012. The fund raising has begun and members being pulled together for the team rosters. In 2012 the funds are being raised for Temiskaming Hospital Foundation , the Diabetes Program-Temiskaming, and the New Liskeard Lions Club Inc.
2011
Last year's fundraising efforts benefited the Team Shan Breast Cancer Awareness for Young Women ($765); Food Forever Fund ($1,937.62); and the New Liskeard Lions Club, Inc. ($1,133). This year's total raised was $3,840.62
In 2011, Claire Leveille of the Nor Arc Pirates raised the most individually with donations of $776.90.
Pictures available from the Foto Shop North. Total times for three races are on the 2011 Festival Page. To see how the teams fared on the 2011 scoreboard, click here.
Each Dragon boat is approximately 13 meters long and holds a crew of 22 people. The race course parallels the beach. The race course is 400 meters long, and involves up to four boats. Each crew is encouraged to provide a steersperson and drummer. All entries were involved in 3 races, and the times are the total of the times for all three races.
